Lesson Learned: God uses both men and women to lead His people. Wisdom and faith are more important than physical strength. True leadership points people to God, not self.

  • Defeated the Midianites with trumpets, jars, and torches
  • Refused to be made king, recognizing God as Israel's ruler
  • Later stumbled by creating an ephod that led Israel astray

Lesson Learned: God chooses unlikely people and delights in showing His power through weakness. Victory comes from God, not our resources or abilities. Even after great victories, we must guard against pride and idolatry.

Key Verse: Judges 6:12 - "When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, 'The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.'"

  • Fell in love with Delilah who betrayed him to the Philistines
  • Had his eyes gouged out after his hair was cut
  • Killed more Philistines in his death than in his life

Key Verse: Judges 16:28 - "Then Samson prayed to the LORD, 'Sovereign LORD, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more.'"

  • Served as the last judge of Israel
  • Anointed both Saul and David as kings

Key Verse: 1 Samuel 3:10 - "The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, 'Samuel! Samuel!' Then Samuel said, 'Speak, for your servant is listening.'"

Saulโ€‹

  • Disobeyed God by offering sacrifice and sparing Agag
  • Became jealous of David and tried repeatedly to kill him
  • Consulted a medium in desperation
  • Died in battle along with his sons

Lesson Learned: Partial obedience is disobedience. Jealousy and insecurity destroy leadership. Position and outward success don't guarantee a right heart. Religious activity cannot substitute for genuine obedience.

Key Verse: 1 Samuel 15:22 - "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams."

Key Verse: Psalm 51:10 - "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."

  • Built the magnificent temple in Jerusalem
  • Judged with legendary wisdom (case of two mothers)
  • Wrote thousands of proverbs and songs
  • Married many foreign wives who turned his heart to idols
  • Kingdom split after his death due to his oppression

Lesson Learned: Great wisdom doesn't guarantee faithful living. Compromise in marriage and worship leads to spiritual decline. Pursuing "everything under the sun" without God leads to emptiness. Strong starts don't guarantee strong finishes.

Key Verse: Ecclesiastes 12:13 - "Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind."

  • Fled from Jezebel's threats and heard God's still small voice
  • Taken to heaven in a whirlwind without experiencing death

Lesson Learned: God powerfully uses those who boldly stand for truth. Even the strongest believers experience fear and discouragement. God meets us in our weakness and whispers encouragement. Spiritual victories don't immune us from spiritual battles.

Key Verse: 1 Kings 18:21 - "Elijah went before the people and said, 'How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.'"

Key Verse: 2 Kings 2:9 - "When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, 'Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?' 'Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,' Elisha replied."

  • Warned of coming judgment and promised restoration
  • Gave most detailed prophecies of the coming Messiah

  • Witnessed the destruction of Jerusalem and temple
  • Remained in Judah after exile, later taken to Egypt
  • Promised the New Covenant in the midst of judgment

Lesson Learned: Faithfulness to God's call matters more than success or acceptance. Speaking truth may bring suffering rather than popularity. God's greatest promises often emerge in darkest times. Tears and compassion should accompany warnings.

Key Verse: Jeremiah 29:11 - "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'"

Ezekielโ€‹

Books: Ezekiel

Key Characteristic: Prophet of visions; ministered among exiles

Major Events:

  • Prophesied with vivid imagery (dry bones, valley of death)
  • Saw vision of future temple and restoration
  • Wife died as sign to the exiles

Key Verse: Daniel 6:10 - "Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before."

  • Esther risked death by approaching the king uninvited
  • Haman was hanged on the gallows prepared for Mordecai
  • Jews delivered; Purim established as celebration

Lesson Learned: God places us in positions of influence "for such a time as this." Courage means doing what's right despite fear. Standing for truth may mean standing alone. God can turn evil plots into triumph for His people.

Key Verse: Esther 4:14 - "For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father's family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?"

Key Verse: Job 19:25-26 - "I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God."

  • Remained at the cross when many fled
  • First to visit the tomb on resurrection morning
  • First person to see the risen Christ
  • Commissioned to tell the disciples: "I have seen the Lord!"

Lesson Learned: Those delivered from much love much. Past brokenness doesn't disqualify us from significant ministry. Faithful devotion in dark times leads to greatest revelations. Jesus honors women as equal witnesses and messengers.

Key Verse: John 20:16-18 - "Jesus said to her, 'Mary.' She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, 'Rabboni!' (which means 'Teacher')... Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: 'I have seen the Lord!'"

Martha & Mary of Bethanyโ€‹

Books: Luke, John

Key Characteristic:

  • Martha: Practical servant; struggled with worry and comparison
  • Mary: Devoted worshiper; chose the "better part"

Major Events:

  • Hosted Jesus in their home in Bethany with brother Lazarus
  • Martha served while Mary sat at Jesus' feet listening
  • Martha complained; Jesus gently corrected her priorities
  • Both grieved when Lazarus died; Jesus wept with them
  • Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead after four days
  • Mary anointed Jesus' feet with expensive perfume

Lesson Learned: Both service and worship are important, but relationship with Jesus comes first. Busy activity can distract from what matters most. Jesus welcomes honest expressions of grief and questions. Extravagant worship of Jesus is never wasted.

Key Verses:

  • Luke 10:41-42 - "'Martha, Martha,' the Lord answered, 'you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are neededโ€”or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.'"
  • John 11:25-26 - "Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.'"
